Andover Quota Club Turns a Page in Service The Quota club of Andover, Massachusetts, U.S.A., opened a new chapter in their service history in September. Supported by a We Share Foundation Youth Outreach grant, the club initiated a reading program for children enrolled in Greater Lawrence YWCA day care programs and purchased more than 150 books, valued at U.S.$1,000, to create a library in the facility. Andover Quota members volunteer in child care and after-school classrooms to read aloud and practice reading skills with children. They also serve as mentors for older children, sharing experiences, knowledge, and a listening ear.

Lee Woodbury, associate executive director of the Lawrence YWCA, says, "Quota International of Andover is making a real difference by giving both high quality books that enliven a child's reading experience and donating their time as volunteers and role models. The children have absolutely devoured the new books and are practicing their reading skills to show Quota members their progress."

The Andover Quota club has a long-standing relationship with the YWCA, according to club service chair Francesca Frazier. "We have been a major contributor to their domestic violence programs, which offer a shelter for battered women and an Oasis Program to help women get back their independence without having to return to their abusers." Some 250 children attend the YWCA day care program, including those served by the shelter and Oasis program. Children range in age from infant to 14 years old. Mary Margaret Yodzis, Senior Writer |
