3: Seasonal Service Projects

Doing seasonal volunteer work is a great way to fill a gap in your calendar.
Seasonal work also adds structure to a projectfor example, a holiday
theme can dictate the elements of an event: snowflakes for decorations,
bells for nametags, etc.

There are a few times of year in particular that our clubs seem to find
exceptional success. Click on the links below for a full list of activities
within each season.
You don't need to be bound by traditional holidayseach month and
day of the year has one (or more) nationally recognized themes. Consider
recognizing Diabetes Awareness Month, Physical Fitness Month, or one of
the thousands of other possibilities. And, of course, as Quotarians, you
also have the opportunity to celebrate Quota Cares Month each March. Click
here to learn about the award-winning ways Quota clubs have filled
March with Quota Caring since this program began.
You can also create your own holiday! For example, Quota International
of Paso Robles, California, created its own "Noise Day," when
they visited a local school, explained the dangers of noise, gave out
earplugs, and held a poster competition.
SEASONAL
SERVICE: Back to School

QI of Atascadero, California, U.S.A.
"Club made up school backpacks filled with school supplies and other
personal items. These were given to homeless shelters for women and children."
QI of Curaçao, Curaçao
"Each year our club delivers schoolbags with school supplies in them
to several schools on the island who had requested the donations for disadvantaged
children at their school. We have distributed 1,000 schoolbags this year
and we started four years ago with 250 bags. We receive most of the materials
from our sponsors. Each school sends in the quantity they need, and a
list is made to divide the deliveries among our members."
QI of Paradise, California, U.S.A.
"Quota donated books for needy children. Donations of books and money
for books came from local businessmen."
QI of Valdosta, Georgia, U.S.A.
"Gave 44 children of U.S. soldiers in Iraq $40 gift cards to Wal-Mart
for back to school shopping."
SEASONAL
SERVICE: Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October)
QI of Alstonville/Wollongbar, New South Wales, Australia
"Club had members and others decorated bras and displayed them along
a fence to promote breast cancer awareness. Generated publicity all over
Australia."
QI of Bismarck-Mandan, North Dakota, U.S.A.
"Donated heart pillows to breast cancer survivors. The pillows are
meant to be used under a seatbelt."
SEASONAL
SERVICE: Winter Holidays

QI of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia
"The club supports two women's refuge centers in a 350 km radius.
They provide personal essentials and special gifts for the women and children
at Christmas."
QI of Armidale, New South Wales, Australia
"Rent out sites at Craftarama. The club has a list of vendors, uses
word of mouth, and contacts other clubs. They send flyers to other clubs
having craft shows to distribute to stall holders and visitors. They also
visit other shows and contact stall holders from there. Club holds the
Craftarama in November, a good time for Christmas shopping. They maintain
a high standard of craft to keep people coming and get new sites to keep
interest. The event is good for fellowship and publicity, and all funds
support local needs. Last year nearly $12,000 was raised."
QI of Gloucester, New South Wales, Australia
"We make Christmas puddings to raise funds. We have helped to build
a sunny sitting room and a palliative care room at our local hospital.
This project has given us heaps of fun and satisfaction."
QI of Nundah-Clayfield, Queensland, Australia
"Sing Christmas carols at the hospital every year."
QI of Parkes, New South Wales, Australia
"Donated items to a shelter for victims of domestic violence. Also
held knitting nights at the shelter. The club also provided Christmas
presents for the children."
QI of Sioux City, Iowa, U.S.A.
"Club brought a signing Santa (for deaf children) to local mall.
Used contacts in school system and newspaper ads to promote event. "
QI of Southeast Texas, Texas, U.S.A.
"At Christmas time, our club collects underwear for low-income, school-age
children as well as socks and small shoes with a surprise inside the sock
or one shoe."
QI of Taree, New South Wales, Australia
"We have adopted the Women's Refuge for disadvantaged women and children
in crisis, an ongoing project. We regularly supply pamper packs for the
women who arrive with very few possessions. This project is successful
because it is a club involvement that is a yearl, ongoing project. There
is no publicity for this project because anonymity is very important for
these women and children. Toys and clothes are provided for the children,
especially at Christmas."
SEASONAL
SERVICE: Easter

QI of Southeast Texas, Texas, U.S.A.
"Easter Baskets for boys and girls homes. Items are put in backpacks,
tote bags, buckets or such with a personal item included with candies."
SEASONAL
SERVICE: Summer Holidays
QI of Glen Innes, New South Wales, Australia
"Organize a deaf camp; get support from District 24."
QI of Parkes, New South Wales, Australia
"Held a garden competition in the town. The money is donated to the
cancer support group, which supports those in the town who have cancer.
The garden competition is a very popular event in the town's calendar
of events and involves all sections of the community: those with gardens,
the public who view them on two open days, and singers and crafts people
who perform and have displays in the gardens. The event provides great
publicity for the Quota club as the town newspaper is a joint promoter
of the competition. Club members enjoy and have fun working together on
the days of the competition. It is run over two days; recently it has
been held on alternate years instead of every year and there is no longer
a competition but an open garden display."
