House Ear Institute The House Ear Institute is a leader in research and education on hearing loss, ear disease, and balance disorders. Established in 1946 by Dr. Howard P. House, the HEI has grown from a one person laboratory to an authority on cell and molecular biology, hearing aid and cochlear implant technology, and causes of hereditary ear disorders. The HEI also sponsors community outreach programs to raise awareness of the causes of hearing loss and provides screening clinics, workshops, and seminars geared to both the general public and industry professionals. Quota's partnership with the HEI is unique in that our research grants provide funding specifically for graduate students who are preparing for a career in cell biology, neuroanatomy, electrophysiology, and auditory implant research. In conjunction with department directors at the HEI, students are chosen based on their field of study as well as their academic performance and extracurricular interests. Each student is assigned to a research professional who serves as a mentor and guides them through their work. The HEI frequently provides written updates on the student's progress and a description of the benefits of the research to deaf individuals. A recent Quota Scholar is Dr. Haa-Yung Lee, who is studying otitis media (middle ear infection), a common childhood disease, and also one of the major causes of hearing loss in children. Dr. Lee's research is focused on finding a new way to treat this ailment, as existing bacteria have developed resistance to the antibiotics currently used as treatment. An additional benefit of this research will be determining which antibiotics are no longer useful, thus helping to ensure that a physician prescribes the appropriate medicine to ease the suffering of their patients. Ultimately, the development of an accurate diagnostic tool and treatment will reduce the possibility of hearing loss as a result of middle ear infections.
