Service with Scouts Sparks Charleston Club

When the local Girl Scout Council decided to develop troops within public housing projects in West Virginia, the Charleston Quota club signed up to sponsor one.

"The area where we sponsor a Girl Scout troop has a dense concentration of some of the poorest families in the community," notes club member and District Governor Kathleen Sherman. "This community also seems to have a high percentage of people involved in drugs and violence, so a troop will allow these girls to develop in many ways and to have some fun."

The scouts are all smiles at the end of a day spent earning their "Fitness and Exercise" badge with members of QI of Charleston.

The Charleston Quota club sponsors the troop, covering costs of many activities as well as badges and awards. The club held a Halloween costume party for the scouts and hosted a "Teddy Bear and Me Tea Party," where girls focused on etiquette. Added Kathleen, "What a joy to see these girls learning as Girl Scouts!"
