A Dear Member Remembers Quota Service

Liz Kernohan is presented with the Member of Australia award by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC, Governor of New South Wales. Liz received the award on September 23, 2004, one month before her sudden and unexpected death.

The We Share Foundation, Quota International's charitable arm, received a generous bequest of Aus.$25,000 from the estate of Camden Quota Past President Dr. Liz Kernohan. The career academic and Member of Parliament in New South Wales arranged the bequest in 2001, becoming one of the first foundation benefactors and its highest donor to date. She died suddenly of a heart attack in October 2004.

The executor of the estate, Past Quota Governor Nan Cottle, said her lifelong friend "chose to donate to the We Share Foundation because both Liz and her mother, Betty, were dedicated Quotarians who valued the Quota philosophy of service to the community through friendship with like-minded women. Liz was a very community-minded person and her Quota friends were highly valued."

Liz achieved much in her 65 years both professionally and in her political career. She was an agricultural scientist and expert in animal husbandry at the University of Sydney. A vibrant personality and quick wit led her to public office, where she served as the first female mayor of Camden and the first woman elected as Camden's state MP. After retirement from state politics in 2003, she was re-elected a local Camden councilor—the position in which she first started her illustrious political career.

Liz Kernohan meets Lizzie, a mascot of the 2000 Olympics held in Sydney, Australia.

In 2000, Liz was honored to be chosen for the team of runners to carry the Olympic torch through Camden. And just one month before her death, she was invited to Government House where she was honored with the Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of over 30 years of service to her community.

In 2000, Liz was chosen for the team of runners to carry the Olympic Torch through her hometown of Camden, New South Wales, Australia.

So many mourned the sudden death of the local icon that the church where the funeral was held was obliged to install a large video screen and loudspeakers for the services. The community formed a guard of honor along a main thoroughfare to bid farewell to Liz as her funeral cortege passed through town.

While Quota International mourns the loss of a dear member, Liz's legacy lives on in Quota service supported by the We Share Foundation.
