White House Photographers Choose Contest Winners White House staff photographers selected the top winners in the third annual We Share Foundation International Photography Contest. Quota International of Magnolia, Arkansas, U.S.A., received the 2003 Grand Prize for a portrait of infant hearing screening in a local hospital, using medical equipment provided by the club.
The Magnolia Quota club aims to help local people with hearing impairment by providing hearing aids, batteries, and transportation; assisting a deaf pre-school; and sponsoring sign language classes for the community. When the club discovered that Magnolia Hospital needed infant-hearing screening equipment, Quota volunteers orchestrated several fund-raisers to purchase an instrument that already has detected problems in two percent of the babies screened. The Cops 'n' Kids Reading Program began in Racine when police officer Julia Burney received a donation of 10,000 books. Officers distributed books from their squad cars to kids in impoverished neighborhoods to promote literacy and good relations with the local community. The Kenosha-Racine Quota club helped launch programs in both cities. The idea spread throughout Quota District 22 and into Quota International. Today, a number of U.S. clubs and districts sponsor Cops 'n' Kids programs in their communities. To meet Hear Ye, Kenosha-Racine's hearing dog, and to learn more about the
club's Cops 'n' Kids work, click here.
One of Quota's newest clubs, Quota International of Coral Springs-Parkland, wanted to achieve a big service impact with a small price tag. They met their goal on a soccer field by sponsoring a local youth team, providing a club member as coach, and adding a deaf boy named Travis to the team roster. Travis became a team stand-out because of his personality and his gifts, not his deafness. For the complete story, click here. Each winning club in the photography contest has been invited to designate a donation in their name to any Club-to-Club World Service Project in the following increments: Grand Prize, U.S.$500; Second Place, U.S.$250; and Third Place, U.S.$100. The deadline for the We Share Foundation's 2004 International Photography Contest is October 1, 2004. To learn more and print an entry form, click here. |
