    Down the Suriname River

After a bus ride into the interior of Suriname, June's jauntiness led the group downstream without a paddle. However, the village boatman provided a large Yamaha motor.

A six-hour ride down the Suriname River takes June and her companions deep into the jungle.

The group passed several villages along the river, which June called "warm and remarkably clean." Because the river was low during the dry season, the travelers were forced to walk to shore and through the rainforest and jungle several times along the journey.

All along the river, locals gather to swim, bathe, wash clothes and dishes, and fish.
