37's first Governor.
PROJECT
DESCRIPTION
The Angela D'Audney Charitable Trust was set up in memory of New Zealand television
personality Angela D'Audney who died of a brain tumor. It was her wish that
a charitable trust be set up to raise money for a NZ$6 million non-invasive
laser machine that treats brain tumors, spinal tumors, prostate cancer and
is having very good results treating patients with Parkinson's disease. This
machine would be the first in Australasia.
Our goals were to:
- Raise funds toward the purchase of this non-invasive laser machine.
- Obtain maximum exposure for the Angela D'Audney Charitable Trust.
- Obtain maximum exposure for QI of Auckland and QI of Takapuna with a view
to attracting new members and lifting the profile of our respective clubs
within the community.
- Obtain maximum exposure for Quota International as we had the privilege
of being able to incorporate a visit from our International President, South
Pacific Area Director, and South Pacific Area Liaison.
- Complete a Quota Cares Month project.
- Raise the awareness of "Look GoodFeel Better" (a charitable
program that works with the cosmetic companies in New Zealand to assist
cancer patients to cope with hair loss, skin irritations, etc.)
- Raise the awareness of cancer.

QI of Auckland President Pat Saunders, South Pacific Area Director Carolyn
Rice, District 37 Governor Lyn McKenzie, Past International President Beris
Pritchard. Seated (left to right): Luncheon Master of Ceremonies Jenny Goodwin,
guest speaker Karen Olsen, and 2002-2003 International President Beatriz Doran-Scoop.
Fund-raising luncheon speakers included:
- Karen Olsen, who addressed us on her current position as a meteorologist
for TVNZ and her involvement with Angela D'Audney, a friend and colleague.
- Our International President Beatriz Doran-Scoop, who addressed us on things
"Quota."
- Anthony Falkov, Angela's oncologist, who addressed on his work and the
need for the machine.
- A presentation from "Look GoodFeel Better," the charitable
organization that assists cancer patients. It was explained that trained
beauty therapists assist cancer patients referred by hospitals. Their services
are free to patients, and products are donated by pharmaceutical companies.
RELATED
RECRUITMENT ACTIVITIES
Each guest at our luncheon was given a bag containing a QI brochure (which
includes the benefits of membership), a donation receipt, a membership interest
response form, and brochures from the sponsors. Each guest was also given
a yellow rose (meaning "friendship"). They were asked to pass the
rose on to someone else and to mention that they had received it from Quota
and mention the fund-raiser. On the other hand, should the guest wish to retain
the yellow rose, then we extended it to them in Quota friendship.
MEDIA/COMMUNITY
EDUCATION
Because Angela D'Audney was a TV presenter and personality, our clubs worked
in conjunction with the Trustees of her Trust (fund-raising luncheon guest
speakers Karen Olsen and Dr. Anthony Falkov). We were able to use their contacts
to advertise our luncheon. News releases were sent to our local newspapers
and radio stations. We were also able to work with the Cancer Society to advertise
our luncheon. Currently we are following up our luncheon with a press release
and photographs.
BENEFITS
TO CLUB/COMMUNITY
The benefits are:
- To our clubs: Raising our club profiles in the community and making
good contacts for future fund-raising projects.
- To our members: Members worked together and also had experience
in a major fund-raising event. All members worked hard to sell tickets and
club morale was increased.
- To our community: Raised the profile of other organizationsthe
Angela D'Audney Charitable Trust (enabling them to continue to fund-raise
in the community for the purchase of the machine) and the "Look GoodFeel
Better" program. We have raised funds for a machine that will treat
cancer patients. As cancer can affect or touch every member of the community,
this machine will benefit all ethnic, gender, and age groups within New
Zealand. The machine will be able to treat all medically suitable cancer
patients with 'non-invasive' laser treatment, negating the need for invasive
surgery in the treatment of cancer. While it may not always prolong life,
it certainly allows for a better quality of life for the cancer patients.
