Quota International of Manila South, The Philippines
    Deafness Resource Library

Thanks to Manila South Quotarians, the Philippines' first specialized library for the deaf was opened to the public last year. Over the course of several years, the club has collected hard-to-come-by books and materials for deaf individuals; their teachers, caregivers, and parents; and the general public. This year, they purchased tables, chairs, and other supplies and consulted with a professional librarian to develop library procedures, catalog resources, and coordinate events to complete the library.

The library, located in the J. Gualandi School for the Hearing Impaired, has been a tremendous asset to the community. Audiology students from Southville International College used its resources to research deafness and undergo practical training on hearing testing, while local teachers accessed current teaching techniques and other news.

The library also served as a venue for building community. Teachers hold meetings with parents and connect them with resources there, and the space was also the site of a lecture for parents and students called "Can the Deaf Hear?," which featured presentations by an audiologist, a speech therapist, and teachers and parents of deaf children.

As the country's only library for the deaf, it has also been a valuable resource for Quotarians throughout the Philippines, who use its resources to better understand the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

“Yes, the deaf can hear knowledge. In fact, they crave knowledge, as do their parents, for theirs is a truly different world from that of the hearing. We can only do so much for our child, and when we know that there are other people championing our cause, our burden becomes a lighter load to carry.”
