International of Legazpi-Mayon, The Philippines
Stitch
for a Living
Quota
International of Legazpi-Mayon didn't let three major typhoons interfere
with their vision: to empower disadvantaged women and speech- and hearing-impaired
individuals through skills training and micro-lending. In spite of the
havoc wrought by the storms, which left thousands homeless through the
province, Quotarians pursued their Stitch for a Living program, recruiting
20 students from a local school for speech- and hearing-impaired people;
securing sewing machines, fabric, and other materials; and enlisting the
expertise of local professionals.

The
program kicked off with a skills training for all participants, including
lectures, discussions, and practical hands-on instruction in sewing, which
was followed up with ongoing supervision and coaching. Through the program,
the students not only sewed scrub uniforms for local professionals, but
they also developed the skills and secured the tools to build their own
profitable businessesat the conclusion, they earned their own sewing
machines and could market their experience to the community. With Legazpi-Mayon
Quotarians' support, they stitched far more than scrubsthey stitched
livelihoods for themselves and their families.
