An
Interactive Library for Hard-of-Hearing Individuals

As
technology becomes increasingly crucial to our daily lives, Iloilo Quotarians
have made sure that their local hearing-impaired community has been able
to keep pace. Their interactive library opened its doors on February 25,
2006, with many local leaders and members of the media present. Since
then, it has been open to the public to cater to the needs of hearing-impaired
individuals and the general public. Equipped with books on multiple topics,
the library also features a crucial resource: computer skills training.
Computer skills training for hearing-impaired students presents a problem
in a resource-strapped community, as it requires a teacher who knows sign
language as well as computers. The club put its students on the fast-track
to successand provided an excellent role modelwhen it hired
a hearing-impaired computer technician to teach students how to operate
the computer and use essential programs. By teaching in sign language,
the teacher has helped the students to learn quickly and easily, and as
a result of this hands-on training course, they are computer literate
and confident in their skills. No matter how important technology becomes,
though, nothing will ever take the place of books in a library, and Iloilo
Quotarians made sure that students had plenty of reading material to enjoy!

| The
establishment of the interactive library was warmly received by the
municipality of Leganes and the neighboring municipalities, because
it helped in the education of the hearing-impaired members of their
community. |
