The
Atis of Antique
Poverty
Surrounds Indigenous People
The needs of the Atis of Antique, a group of indigenous Filipinos settled
in the Cebu town of Naga may seem overwhelming, but Talisay Quotarians
are committed to meeting them. The community moved to the region five
years ago; most are illiterate and, other than the sale of bracelets they
make from hose-like materials, have no means of livelihood. Fifty families,
most of whom have not been educated about hygiene, must share two bathrooms.
Their children are malnourished and attend a dilapidated school with a
roof that offers no protection from the rain and walls that are unstable.
The school teacher is severely underpaid and is only able to come when
he has money for transportation.

Talisay
Club Offers Help, Assesses Need
In 2006, the Talisay club visited the community with food, soap, toothbrushes,
slippers, pails, and food, but quickly realized that much more needed
to be done. Now, they are establishing a program to address the Atis'
health, educational, and economic needs. Quotarians will educate residents
about hygiene and birth control, provide medical and dental care, treat
malnourished children, improve school and living conditions, and provide
livelihood training.
Hope
for the Future
Local donations are helping to meet the Atis' most basic needs, while
Club-to-Club donations have the power to support long-term change, funding
classroom materials, a teacher allowance, and supplies for soap-, candle-,
and craft-making classes so all residents can learn skills to support
themselves.
