Stuka
Prisiri (To Learn with Pleasure)
School brings smiles to children's faces in Suriname, thanks to the local
Quota club's Club-to-Club program. For the past two years, Stuka Prisiri
(To Learn with Pleasure), has not only provided students from economically-depressed
areas with basic skills training, but also with an attitude toward school
and education that will make them life-long learners and increase their
chances for success in adulthood.
Held
twice a month, the Basic Skills program gives students the essential study
and social skills they will need to succeed in school, connecting them
with students from various areas to learn to work with diverse groups
of people and build a team. It also gives them a sense of the world and
opportunities that lie within and beyond their own community by taking
them on tours of local businesses and fostering discussions about the
professions available to them. This year, the club hopes to fund more
trips like one of last year's highlights: a tour of a local hotel to introduce
children to the hospitality industry and give them an opportunity to use
the etiquette skills the program teaches them. The club also aims to add
a mentoring component to the program; in addition to participating in
group activities, children will receive a buddy to provide personal coaching
and guidance that their resource- and time-strapped families might not
be able to offer.

Club-to-Club donations will support the nuts and bolts that are crucial
to running the program: materials for classes, food and drinks, clothing,
transportation to Stuka Prisiri, and trips to local businesses.
