New
Downs Syndrome Outreach
In the Sainik Farm community, those suffering from Down's
syndrome are among the most neglected individuals in society. Few are given
the education to care for themselves and even fewer receive the job-skills
training to support themselves. As a result, they often live in poverty and
experience social isolation.
This reality will soon change as a result of Quota International of Sainik
Farm's most recent Club-to-Club project. Their Muskan ("Smile")
program will provide 80 people with Down's syndrome, ranging from age
10 to 50, with vocational education and classes in self-care. They will
also earn a wage for preparing food items, making candles and crafts,
and performing other tasks that provide them with roles in mainstream
society. While boosting participants' self-esteem and confidence, the
Muskan program will also give the Down's syndrome community public visibility
to promote acceptance and understanding.
Continuing
Community Service
The
Muskan project is an addition to the many services Sainik Farm Quotarians
provide to the most neglected in their society; they also operate a home
for the aged, preschool, orphanage, and medical dispensary. Club-to-Club
funds will support each of these important projects, covering maintenance
and craft and other materials for the Down's syndrome students; teacher's
salary, food, clothing, school supplies, toys, and books for the preschool;
and doctor's salary and medicines for the dispensary.
