Educational Fund for the Leganes Resource Center for the Deaf

    Deaf Center Offers School Classes
Since 1998, Club-to-Club donations have funded programming, equipment, and other resources for the Leganes Resource Center for the Deaf, which Iloilo Quotarians helped establish and have supported since its inception. Most recently, they established an interactive library with books, videos, and computers to help deaf students develop early literacy skills and strengthen connections between families using the library.

With Quotarian support, Leganes has evolved into a school for preschool-, elementary-, and high school-aged children with hearing impairments. It has the potential to change the lives of hundreds of children and their families—if staffing needs are met and if children are able to get to the center. Current funding allows for a librarian just three days a week, and the daily cost for transportation to the center is 60 cents (U.S.), a significant portion of an average family's five dollar daily income. It is difficult for parents to justify this expense, when employment opportunities for deaf individuals are few, and these children are unlikely to contribute to the family income. Thus the children stay home.

    Transportation to School is Critical
The Iloilo club funded transportation in the first years of the center, but in 2004, rising fuel costs forced them to drop transportation from their budget; consequently, enrollment dropped. By June, the center's services were utilized by just 12 children, two of whom later had to leave because of financial constraints.

By providing transportation and proper instruction, the Iloilo club will maximize the center's resources and give children the opportunity to become self-reliant. With Club-to-Club donations, the Quotarians will give children travel allowances and fund a full-time librarian.
