Quota International of Manila

As Quota clubs all over the world contribute to the United Nation's goal to Create a Better World, Quota International of Manila chose to hone in on one particular objective during Quota Cares Month—to improve maternal care and combat child mortality through better health care and education. Without proper medical attention and sufficient resources during pregnancy, mothers-to-be in poor communities of the Philippines often give birth at home and face particularly high mortality rates. The Shalom Christian Birthing Home was founded in response to this reality, providing discounted prenatal through postnatal services to 120-150 families each month.

Offering such significant services at low rates means that the actual cost of care must be absorbed by other donors. Enter Quota International of Manila, who mobilized their entire community to support the birthing home in a variety of ways throughout the month of March. Using money from their annual garage sale, the club purchased mult-ivitamins, antibiotics, medical supplies, and baby clothes for the Home and donated additional funds to help continue growth and offering services to even more families. The culminating event was the club's seminar on prenatal and postnatal care and first aid, featuring seminars by a local doctor and nurse, a luncheon, and the distribution of 80 first aid kits, supplied using cash and in-kind donations Manila Quotarians solicited from friends, companies, and foundations: a true community effort.
