"Think the Drink" is a program described by those three small words that makes one big difference, thanks to Quota International of Bathurst. Implemented by several local government agencies, the initiative raises young people's awareness of liquor laws and safe drinking and safe driving practices through courses at local high schools. By targeting students ages 16 to 18, the project aims for proactive education, ensuring that teenagers have the knowledge they need to make good decisions once they come of legal age.
The courses, which are run by Australian Training Solutions, cost $70 per participant, but students pay only $10. Minimizing the cost ensures that more students receive important information about drinking and driving, as well as a high attendance. In the past, government agencies have assumed the additional cost, but this March, Quota International of Bathurst became the first community group to participate, donating $1,000 from their "Bride of the Year Quest" fund-raiser. As a result, 20 students were able to take the course in March. Twenty students make a tremendous impact as they share the message with their peers and families. The club's contribution also means a big impact on the club's community profile: the "Think the Drink" program, as well as the "Bride of the Year Quest" fund-raiser, garnered headlines in the local media, and all March events featured Quota brochures. One new member, another recruit, increased club morale, and safer, healthier teens: for Quota, three words can go a long way!
