Project HOPE has been engaged in rehabilitation activities in Haiti over the past year to help those injured during the 2010 earthquake to fully recover from their injuries and live productive lives. But until now, there has been no dedicated facility for physical rehabilitation, a much needed service for the up to 4000 amputees now in Haiti. Together with partners CBM, Prosthetika, the Humanitarian Network, and the Avon Foundation for Women, Project HOPE volunteers have assembled three modular buildings at the Adventist Hospital (HAH) in Diquini to serve as Rehabilitation Center. The Center has been named “Chanje Lavi,” which means “Changing Lives” in Creole. Patients are already being treated in the just completed facility, with plans for 1000 patients to be served at the Rehab Center over the next 18 months, and another 1000 served through the Center’s outreach services.

Urban Santas and Elves Deliver Over 1200 Personalized Presents to Inner City Children

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 31, 2011

Urban Humanitarian Projects (UHP) held its third annual Urban Santa Project (USP) event last week, which involved working with 19 different organizations to deliver personalized Christmas presents to over 1200 children. Urban Santa team, which consists of a Santa Clause and 3-4 elves visited almost every organization during the week of Christmas (including Christmas day) to hand deliver the presents. This year’s event was summarized in a short video: http://vimeo.com/34357643

By collecting each child?s name, age, and gender in advance, the team was able to select and wrap appropriate toys for each child. This year?s list of partners included Covenant House, Providence House, Harlem United, Yele Haiti, Operation Haiti Recovery, Palladia Inc, Mary Haven: Center of Hope, Lincoln Hospital, Trinitas Regional Medical Center, and several others.

Urban Santa Project 2011 had 7 different Santas and over 25 elves who helped purchase, wrap, and deliver the presents. In the weeks prior to Christmas, UHP team contacted various charitable organizations who serve underprivileged children and complied a list of all over 1200 children. A team of volunteer elves then purchased age and gender appropriate toys for the children. The toys were wrapped and labeled with the children?s name at two Urban Santa workshops, one in New York and the other in New Jersey. Space for wrapping was donated by one of UHP?s advisory board members, Dr. Nilay Shah in New York, and by Homewood Suites in New Jersey.

?Seeing the expression on the face of a child?s face when he or she sees Santa walk through the door is simply priceless,? said Neha Rana, UHP?s project coordinator who helped organize this year?s event.

This year’s event was funded mostly by students and faculty at St. George’s University, with a major donation from the school’s chancellor, Dr. Charles Modica.

Many of the partners for this year?s event were from New York and New Jersey. However, UHP was also able to reach out to children at 5 different orphanages in Haiti through two new partners, Operation Haiti Recovery and Yele Haiti Foundation. Gifts to the children in Haiti were shipped via Amerijet International, who generously sponsored all shipping costs.

Urban Santa Project was founded in 2009 with just 23 children at Covenant House in New York. This was followed by the 2010 event that involved approximately 300 gifts from five organizations in New York and New Jersey. UHP?s event is unique in the sense that it involves a Santa Clause and group of elves visiting the children to hand deliver the presents. This is a very magical experience for the children, who enjoy a visit from Santa and his elves.

Urban Humanitarian Projects (UHP) is a student-run non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization founded by St. George?s University medical students (Grenada, West Indies) completing their medical training in New York City. UHP?s mission – to improve the education, healthcare, and quality of life of the underprivileged ? is supported by working with established charities throughout the United States and abroad to make a positive impact in the lives of disadvantaged children and adults. UHP past projects include the annual Urban Santa Project – Christmas day gift delivery, GURUS High School Mentorship Project, and a semi-annual video game tournament fundraiser event which raised over $ 100,000 for humanitarian projects worldwide. The organization?s tax-exempt fiscal sponsor, FJC, a foundation of philanthropic funds, allows start-up programs to utilize their services to accept donations and operate as a legal entity. FJC maintains the organization?s financial records, assisting in donor relations and all legally-mandated monitoring and reporting. UHP is fully supported by St. George?s University and its administration. http://www.uhp.org

What are some fun and/or educational preschool aged games?

Question by : What are some fun and/or educational preschool aged games?
I work at a daycare that doesn’t have a lot of toys or supplies for projects. I know some finger games and rhymes, but I would like some help to keep the atmosphere fun and fit for learning. Any ideas? Thanks!

Answer by Jen
My colleague has a game that works well with preschoolers, is cheap and uses recycled materials.

Collect caps from all kinds of containers, such as water bottles, gallons of milk, etc. Aim to collect a ice cream bucket full of them. Get different colors and sizes. This alone will be an activity. You can keep track of how many you have and what colors they are. Make a graph, or just count them out each day. It will be good practice in learning numbers and counting.

To play a game with the caps, put the bucket of caps in the middle of a circle of children. Each child takes a turn rolling a dice. When the number comes up, he takes that many caps out of the bucket and puts them in front of him. Then it’s the next person’s turn. Go around the circle as many times as you wish.

As the children are taking their turn, talk about what is going on.
“Lauren rolled a number five. Let’s help her count.”
“Look, Ben has one brown cap. There aren’t very many of those. All of us have red caps. There’s lots of red caps.”

When the game is over, have each child count their caps. Who has the most? or say “Who has 20 caps? Who has 19 caps?” etc. If you don’t want to have a “winner”, then forget counting the amount of caps and count them by color. “How many blue caps do each of you have? Count your blue caps.”

You can put the caps away by having each child put a certain amount of caps into the bucket, or put certain colors into the bucket.

The good part about this game is that you don’t have a winner or loser, and there isn’t a specific ending on it- so you can have the game take as much time as you need it to. The game reinforces basic math skills of counting, sorting, more and less. It also reinforces color recognition.

Riz Khan – Junk food or humanitarian aid?

There are currently an estimated 195 million children suffering from malnutrition around the world, according to the international medical humanitarian organisation Doctors Without Borders. The problem is compounded by the politics surrounding global food aid programmes, with critics concerned that supplies donated consist of nutritionally inadequate fortified corn-soy flours that fail to provide the nutrients young children need most. On this episode, we ask: Is the West dumping its substandard food on the developing world? Do international food donors really provide sustainable aid or are they actually part of the problem? How can the West really help the world’s poor to beat malnutrition?
